Champ Camp completes eighth straight year in Bay County

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The 8th Annual CHAMP Camp wrapped up in Panama City on Saturday.

Champ Camp brings in some of the best instructors in the world, including quite a few familiar names, such as former NFL linebacker and Rutherford alum Will Witherspoon, Bay High grad and current defensive end at Florida State Janarius Robinson, and defensive end for the Chicago Bears Akiem Hicks.

Players run basic drills, learn new routes, work on techniques and much more, but the real focus of the camp is the importance of discipline off the field.

CHAMP is an acronym that stands for character, heart, attitude, motivation, and pride - all things that the camp tries to instill in the young athletes so they will become good people within their communities.

"Some of the key points of my message to the kids is just persistence. Believe in yourself. Always have confidence in yourself. I think the kids really respond to that when you talk to them in a way that's relatable and makes them want to be successful at whatever it is they wanna do," said Hicks.

"Basically just telling them there's no age on being a leader. Just be a leader. In order to be a leader, you've gotta set a good example and be good to teammates," said Robinson.

"My message is always gonna be keep your focus and know where you have to pick your battles. That's with friends, family, coaches. There are gonna be times when you question what coach says, but there's a way to do it. There are all of these ways you have to understand how to go about that. If you don't do it the right way, it's only gonna affect you negatively. If you do it the right way, you're gonna see how much further it'll take you," said Witherspoon.
