World Oceans Day Aims to Preventing Plastic Pollution in the Area

June 8th is World Oceans Day. This year, the focus is on preventing plastic pollution. For the first time Gulf World, Gulf World Marine Institute, Divers Den, and Sharky's have teamed up for a full day of activities. Friday morning a beach clean up kicked off the day at the county pier.

Dolphin discovery says items such as a plastic bottle can take over 400 years to break down,
and plastic bags take around 10 to 20 years. Organizers for today say the festivities have one goal in mind.

"To raise awareness of the importance of taking care of all the waters we enjoy and how ever we enjoy them, maybe we go kayaking or go to the beach, just really taking care of all those waters," said Sam Tuno, Gulf World Marketing and Sales and Marketing Manager.

The day full of events included an underwater clean up dive and informational activities at Gulf World.
