Walton County Sheriff’s deputies found a baby in need of medical attention after a drug suspect apparently left the 23-month-old in a car for an unknown amount of time.

Deputies say they pulled over 27-year-old Joshua Daniel Huckaba on State Highway 83 Tuesday afternoon near Morris Drive after noticing it had a broken windshield.

Huckaba admitted to the investigators he was smoking marijuana in the vehicle they soon learned he was driving with a suspended license. Deputies initially believed the baby was sleeping in the backseat but found the child unresponsive to both voice and touch.

“Huckaba admitted to leaving the child inside the vehicle unattended while he went inside a nearby residence,” officials wrote.

The child was treated and released at a local hospital and is now in the care of Florida’s Department of Children and Families.

Huckaba is charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The incident is still under investigation.
