One man is dead and a police officer on paid leave after an officer-involved shooting in Mexico Beach on Wednesday.
The shooting happened at the Rustic Sands Campgrounds around 9:30 a.m. and residents say, it’s normally a very safe and family friendly place.
The search that started in Franklin County and ended in Mexico Beach.
“Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the theft of a donzi boat from over in Franklin County and they developed a suspect they believed to be residing at the Rustic Sands Campground,” said Bay County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Tommy Ford.
Mexico Beach police officers approached the camper they believed to be occupied by the potential suspect.
Sheriff Ford said, “as he came to the door, he was armed, he did, according to witnesses, pointed the gun at the officers.”
“And then you hear, pop pop pop,” said a Rustic Sands Campground Resident.
Mexico Beach police officers fired their weapons at the armed man.
The suspect was taken to Bay Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
His name has not been released.
The name of the officer involved hasn’t been released and on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the matter.
The suspect was also wanted on 12 warrants out of Pasco County.
