The driver of the Toyota Prius reportedly involved in a deadly hit-and-run over Labor Day weekend in Panama City Beach turns himself in to authorities.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say Barry Gardner of Panama City Beach was involved in the wreck on Back Beach road near Gulf View Drive. They say Gardner was driving a Prius east on Back Beach when he turned left in front of a Honda motorcycle, driven by 52-year old Robert Lee Smith of Panama City. Smith’s passenger, 23-year old Rebecca Summar, of Arkansas died from her injuries. Smith was seriously injured.

During an interview, Gardner reportedly told troopers he initially pulled over on the side of the road after he felt something hit his car, but when he saw witnesses helping the victims, he left the scene. Troopers say Gardner parked the Prius in his garage and hadn’t removed it since the wreck.

He is charged with failure to remain at a crash involving death and involving injury.
