Springfield mayor unable to contact city clerk, begins search to fill the position

News

SPRINGFIELD, Fla. – The city of Springfield may be hiring a new city clerk as the mayor says they can’t reach the current one.

During the regular commission meeting, Springfield mayor Ralph Hammond informed the board that he has been unable to make contact with the current city clerk Lee Penton for two weeks and that he has opened up a search for the position.

The mayor emphasized that he would still like to get in touch with Penton and discuss the situation they are in, however the city cannot wait as hurricane recovery tasks are ever increasing.

“I want to sit down and talk with him and see where he is coming from. I would have loved to have done it before I talked to the commission but I don’t want the commission to get blindsided by what happens. If he needs some vacation and get things right, by all means let’s do that. If it’s a burnout and thinks he needs to go, I will work with him on that. Right now, it’s a lot of unknown,” said Hammond.

In the meantime, the city clerk’s assistant administrator will be the acting city clerk.
