Presentation of ‘Better Shelter’ offers insight into possible temporary housing aid

News

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – With the housing needs of the area post Hurricane Michael, one group is attempting to bring some relief through temporary shelters.

Rebuild Bay County Inc. held a reception presentation of the Better Shelter, a solar powered temporary shelter developed by the IKEA foundation in 2015.

The units can be shipped flat, assembled under four hours, have a retail value of less than $2,000, and has been proven to last six times longer than a tent.

Although they are currently not available in the United States, Rebuild Bay County Inc. said the shelter has been drawing interest and the need for them are certainly there.

“To look at this as a viable solution. It’s affordable, less than $2,000, and it’s something that many people could use on their own. It’s something that we’d like our municipalities and county government to look at to see if that’s an option. We’re just trying to keep the dialogue moving and the conversation happening around some housing solutions,” stated Janice Lucas, Rebuild Bay County Inc. vice chair.

If you’re interested, the Better Shelter will be on display for the public at the FSU Holley Center till June 8th.
