Okaloosa County, Fla. - A woman who adopted and had sex with her teenage victim was sentenced to six years in prison Wednesday.
Lauren Michelle Myres, 26, plead no contest to one count of unlawful sexual activity with certain minors earlier in December. At her sentencing Myres was designated a sexual offender and will have to register as such for the rest of her life, prosecutors wrote in a news release. Upon her release from prison, she will be placed on sex offender probation for 4 years and will have to complete sex offender counseling.
She also can have no contact with the victim or any minors.
These charges arose in May of this year when law enforcement received a crime stopper tip alleging an inappropriate relationship between Myres and the 17-year-old victim. Myres was a caseworker for Families First Network who originally had been assigned the victim as one of the children she was to assist, prosecutors wrote.
She eventually decided to foster the victim and ultimately adopted him. After the adoption was finalized it was discovered that Myres had been having sex with the victim. Myres and the victim gave statements to law enforcement that they had sex multiple times over a two-month period.
