Update: 1 dead and 5 others shot, Family members say deputy in stable condition


ALTHA, Fla. (WMBB) — 11:30 am Update:

The Calhoun County Sheriff has confirmed that the deceased person is the shooter. The shooter exchanged shots with another person at the drag strip. His identity has not yet been released but he was shot by deputies.

Authorities say the shooting began over a bet on a race. Officials say that there is no threat to the public, this was an isolated incident.

1:30 a.m. Update:

According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, one man is dead and five other people including a Deputy are injured after someone opened fire at a large gathering at the Powerhouse Drag Strip.

They say the event was a birthday bash and it was supposed to last from 12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. 

Around 8:40 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office says they were called to the drag strip after reports of shots fired and an officer down.

Agencies from Calhoun County as well as surrounding counties responded. 

Authorities say the civilians and the law enforcement officer who were shot were transported to local hospitals to be treated. 

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the incident. 

11:30 p.m. Update:

A Calhoun deputy is in a local hospital after he was shot Saturday night at a raceway in Altha. At least one other individual is reportedly dead and it is unclear how many others, if any, were shot.

News 13 previously confirmed that a deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office who was working at the Powerhouse Drag Strip was shot in upper leg. Zachary Beck said his brother, Sgt. Colby Beck, told family members he had been shot as he was being taken to the hospital.

“I’ve been shot I’ve been hit in the upper leg and it’s bad,” Beck said.

Beck added that earlier Saturday evening he left a message for his brother to be safe.  

“It’s overwhelming,” Beck said.  

Sgt. Beck’s family members say he is in stable condition.

A deputy was shot and at least one other person was shot, although law enforcement sources are not saying how many people were injured, during a car show in Altha Saturday night.

One person was air lifted from the scene.

The incident happened at the Powerhouse Drag Strip at an event called the Tri-States Mega Show, a car show with drag racing and a sound competition.

There is a heavy police presence currently at the scene. News 13 has reporters on the scene and we are trying to get more information as it becomes available.
