Mexico Beach property owners: “It’s not for sale!”

MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (WMBB)- As the cleanup continues in Mexico Beach, property owners are left with the choice of selling their land or rebuilding their homes.

News 13 spoke with four neighbors Tuesday. They say the city brings back too many memories for them to even consider not rebuilding their homes after they were destroyed by Hurricane Michael in October.

We caught up with them as they were having a planning meeting while standing on the foundation of one of their homes.

The four neighbors lived in three homes right next to each other.

This has become part of our being. This is our life blood. We came down here and bought this 40 years ago, said John Cole. The debris from his home has since been cleaned up.

Cole, his wife and their two neighbors aren’t leaving despite the destruction Hurricane Michael left in Mexico Beach.

One of those neighbors, Teresa Munroe, tells us the last five months have been heartbreaking. It was a shock and a devastation. We’ve raised our children here, we’ve grown up here. It’s been part of our life pattern and we’re not ready to abandon that.

Dozens, if not hundreds of others aren’t ready to abandon this part of the coast either.

Signs saying, NOT FOR SALE sit in empty lots next to the beach. The residents say it’s a clear sign to those shopping for land.

We had a rough blow and we’re gonna rebuild and just keep enjoying life. Things heal. Things turn out as they should, said Munroe.

The property owners tell News 13 it may take them as long as ten years to rebuild, but they’re committed.
