Mexico Beach City Council to hold Special meeting regarding Fire Dept. Funding

MEXICO BEACH, Fla. - After the Bay County commission denied the city of Mexico Beach's request for the county to take over its fire department,  the city council is searching for funding.

Time is running out to figure out a plan. The council has until September to come up with a concrete way to get funding but council members hope to reach a solution sooner. After much discussion in Tuesday morning's city council meeting, the council has planned to host a special meeting specifically dedicated to creating a way to fund the much needed department.

City officials said finding money is a must.

"We have to proceed somehow to get the money to run the department because for years it was run on maybe a couple hundred thousand dollars and you can't even buy firemen for a couple hundred thousand dollars and we have 6 full timers. So we have to get that funding," said City Administrator, Mell Smigielski.

The meeting will take place Wednesday, June 27th at 6pm. It will be held at the Mexico Beach Civic Center.
