Local Roller Derby Team Rolls Out New Season

The season opener for a local roller derby team kicked off Sunday night at Skaters Choice Skating Rink in Callaway.

Sunday night was the first game of the season for the Sugar Sands Roller Derby Team.

They matched up against the Valkyries from Port Richie, Florida.
Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track.

Game play consists of a series of short match ups in which both teams designate a jammer who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team.

Even though the matches can get physical, organizers say it is a family friendly event.

“It looks like chaos, but it’s organized chaos. When we’re on the track, both of the teams know each other, we say hi to each other all the time so it’s just a big family just plaing and having a good time. So it’s kind of like plaing football with your family at home, but you come out with love,” said Toni Shields, member of the Sugar Sands Roller Derby Team.

The Sugar Sands Roller Derby team still has 3 more home games this season. View their schedule at flattrackstats.com/teams/58565
