UPDATE: July 23, 2021 9:53 p.m.

MARIANNA, Fla. (WMBB) — A Marianna man is recovering from critical injuries after reportedly being shot in the chest and stabbed early Friday morning.

Around 1:00 a.m., authorities responded to a call at the 4300 block of Woodberry Road about a man who appeared to be suffering from both a gunshot and stab wound.

“During the investigation we learned that the individual went to a house on Woodberry Road and entered into the home and the homeowner did not know who the subject was,” said Marianna Police Chief, Hayes Baggett. “A struggle ensued and he was stabbed.”

Baggett said it’s safe to assume the shooting victim walked into the house on Woodberry looking for help. However, the homeowner didn’t know the man had been shot and reportedly acted in self-defense.

“The victim — the shooting victim never communicated to the homeowner that he had been shot or he was injured in any way so it’s kind of a strange situation at this point,” Baggett said.

It’s still unclear where the shooting occurred, if it was self-inflicted, an accident or if a crime was committed.

“We’re doing what we can at this point, unknowing to us where the crime occurred if there was a crime,” Baggett said. “Obviously we have somebody shot, you know.”

This is the most recent in a slew of shootings here in Marianna. Baggett said there has been an increase in gun violence over the last year.

“It’s concerning to us and there’s most definitely an increase,” Baggett said.

Baggett said more guns are being illegally obtained.

“You know most of the firearms are illegally obtained mostly through vehicle burglaries that’s what we’ve learned.”

Baggett encourages gun owners who keep their firearms in their cars to make sure the door is locked.

The shooting victim was transported by Air Heart to an Alabama hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call the Marianna Police Department at (850) 526-3125 or Chipola Crime Stoppers at (850) 526-5000.
