Fail: Suspect attempts to break into Bay Co. Sheriff’s work vehicle

Bay County

UPDATE: BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) — Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said sometimes his neighbor’s cat will set off his ring camera outside his home.

On Monday at 3 a.m., it wasn’t someone’s pet.

“Immediately got up – called 911- went out there trying to introduce myself,” said Ford.

To his surprise, a person in a hoodie was seen trying to break into his work car.

By the time Ford got outside, the suspect was nowhere to be found.

“I think he was hiding from us at the time because a neighbor also reached out for me and their backyard camera had gone off about 30 minutes after we started looking for him, so he was hiding and trying to get away, and he got lucky this time,” Ford said.

Sheriff Ford recommends always keeping your doors locked and even installing a camera system on your house.

He said cameras are more useful than you think.

“We’ve solved homicides with those type of cameras where we see, you know, maybe the murder vehicle going away from a scene and can put that, you know, car at a murder scene,” said Ford.

Sheriff Ford said investigators deal with car burglaries around the county on a regular basis, and about 99 percent of them can be prevented if you lock your doors.

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) — There are bad choices in life, and then there’s trying to steal from the Sheriff of Bay County.

Sheriff Tommy Ford said he hoped to introduce himself to an apparent burglar that tried to break into his locked vehicle on Monday morning.

He said he woke up to his Ring camera alert system and discovered the intruder on his property. The suspect reportedly fled after motion-activated lights turned on.

After Sheriff Ford called 911, Lynn Haven Police officers and Bay County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.

Sheriff Ford urged residents in a Facebook post to lock their car doors to prevent burglaries. He also thanked the law enforcement officials for their response.
