Last Pass for Debris Pickup in Several Areas of Bay County

News

850 thousand cubic yards of debris has been picked up since Hurricane Michael in Callaway alone. “It’s depressing when you drive around and see piles of debris plus it’s a little bit of a safety issue, you can’t see as well driving and stuff,” said Pamn Henderson, Callaway Mayor.

Monday marks last pass for debris pickup for Callaway, Parker, Springfield, Mexico Beach, and Unincorporated Bay County. “I think it will be encouraging for people that the city is really getting cleared up, were moving forward, things are getting better,” said Mayor Henderson.

It will take four to five weeks for trucks to fully finish picking up the debris. “We’ve got over a hundred miles of roads just in unincorporated bay county, it’s a daunting process,” said Joel Schubert, Bay County Assistant Manager.

The county has created a map that shows which areas are officially clear. “If your road is in red we have not been there yet if your road is in green you can see that that road has been covered in the final pass and there’s pictures associated with it,” said Schubert.

Residents that are faced with any issues can contact the county’s solid waste department. “We can certainly deal with issues on a one on one basis if they come up we certainly know one size doesn’t fit all but we have to have a long term recovery plan this is part of that plan, this is part of the county being responsible,” said Schubert.
