Fortune Lane, a rural dirt road located northwest of the City of Vernon in Washington County, has been closed because of a large sinkhole, county officials wrote in a news release.

The hole is approximately 8 feet in diameter and 5 feet deep . Barricades are set up and the road is closed. No residents are impacted by the closing because of easily accessible alternate routes, officials added.

Water is in the bottom of the hole, no rock is seen, officials wrote. The road is a sand and clay mix. Currently no homes are immediately threatened and there are no injuries to report.

Public Works personnel will attempt to fill the hole. The road will remain closed until further notice.
