Panama City Beach, Fla. - An undercover operation ends with the arrest of a Georgia man after he attempted to scam an elderly victim out of money. The scammer told the victim that he ws a "Deputy Sheriff" from the bay county sheriff's office.
According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office, the victim was told he had missed jury duty and would have to pay a fine. Instead of the typical jury scam, the victim was instructed to meet face-to-face with a "bail bondsman" at a retail location on Back Beach Road.
Later, the victim received another call from the fake Deputy Sheriff who said they needed to pay more money for missing jury duty. The unsuspecting victim agreed to meet at the same location as before.
This time investigators approached the scammer and took him into custody. The suspect is 29 year old Joshua Woods from Jonesboro, Georgia. Woods has been charged with Exploitation of the Elderly, Grand Theft, and Impersonation of a Law Enforcement Officer in the commission of a felony.
