Humanizing the Badge

Stories of citizen encounters with law enforcment are in the headlines almost daily. In recent months, there has been a lot of negative publicity. One Detroit police officer is trying to change that image with a program called Humanizing The Badge. Officer Mike Edwards is the co founder of Humanizing The Badge, he says the mission is built right into the name. “We are trying to show people that who go out everyday and put that badge on, men and women are just like you” Officer Edwards, who goes by Mike the Cop on social media, travels the country speaking to civic groups and students.”We are just trying to get the name out there and establish ourselves” Edwards said. Officer Edwards works in the metro Detroit area as a policeman, but does this work on his own time. He produces videos for a Facebook and Twitter page, as well as other social sites. One project was called “We See You”. It was designed to show support for first responders in law enforcement. He says the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Edwards’ brother lost his life in the line of duty a few years ago. He says he hopes this program will make his brother and other officers proud to wear the uniform. Every 53 hours in this country, a police officer is killed. “We want to honor their memories for sure” Edwards said. Officer Edwards was in Bay County as the keynote speaker for the annual Bay County Chamber of Commerce’s First Responder Luncheon Ceremony.
