Division of Gulf Coast State College wrapping up its final show of the award-winning musical comedy Sunday afternoon.
“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a musical comedy that follows a group of awkward elementary school students as they battle for the spelling championship of a lifetime.
The kids tell hilarious and touching stories from their home lives and spell their way through a series of potentially made up words hoping to never to hear the bell that signals a spelling mistake.
“This is about the power of language. I think we’re losing that a little bit in this world. These kids that are in the spelling be are, of course they’re played by our college students, but they play elementary school students and the have all these little quirks like you did when you’re in elementary school and they use these words to fight, to win, to feel good about themselves. So its been a really great journey,” said Director Hank Rion.
The 2005 broadway show is a fast-paced production with audience participation, making it an instant theatre favorite.
