Graceville Cheerleader Kneels During National Anthem

Graceville High School junior Leanndra Swain has served on homecoming court, is juggling a job, making the grade in school, all while cheering on the Tigers.
But recently she’s been subjected to scrutiny for something she’s doing during the National Anthem; she kneels.
“I don’t feel like there’s equality, justice, and freedom being served to all, and to be that’s what the flag stands for,” said Swain.
Swain said what disappoints her the most, is that people hardly ask why she does it.
“The blue in the flag stands for freedom. Freedom is not being served. Mainly with the police brutality in Blacks, they say we have freedom, justice, but yet when the case is brought up in court, there’s no justice being served,” said Swain.
Someone snapped a photo of her kneeling and it has since gone viral with more than 350 likes and a hundred shares.
For taking a knee, Swain said she’s also received some back-lash from the community.
“I’ve had people stop sponsoring my cheer team because of me taking a stand.I’ve had negative inboxes and comments on my Facebook page,” said Swain.
But Graceville High School is in compliance with Swain’s stance.
In a written statement, administrators said: “Graceville High School as a public educational institute upholds the ‘code of ethics for education’ which states we shall not intentionally violate or deny a student’s legal rights.”
Her mother Carie Myric said she’s stood by her daughter’s side since day one.
“I’m proud of her for standing up for something she believes in her heart is right,” said Myric.
Swain will be cheering on the tigers, during a big game this Friday which also happens to be Veteran’s Day.
“It’s a play-off game and it’s going to determine if whether we go off into play-offs and to state, but other than my kneeling, I’m going to continue to do it. There’s no doubt about it,” said Swain.
Swain also kneels during the pledge of allegiance said she uses that time to pray.
