Firefighters from the Florida Forest Service’s Chipola Forestry Center are dealing with a 20-acre wildfire in the Fountain area in central Bay County, officials wrote in a news release.
Florida Forest Service crews have the Oak Tree Lane Fire 100% contained and have left for the evening. Firefighters will return to check the fire in the morning but lines are secure for the night.
Residents in the area will continue to see and smell smoke, embers and possibly small flames and flare ups through the night as unburned vegetation inside containment lines continues to smolder. Drivers in the area are urged to use caution if they encounter smoke on the roads. They should slow down, turn on their low beam headlights and proceed as if it was fog.
“With many downed trees in the wake of Hurricane Michael, all precautions are being taken to protect life and property with the increased potential of wildfires and risk to firefighters,” officials added.
Residents in the area are encouraged to head the warnings of law enforcement officials and firefighters if asked to evacuate.
