Family of WWII Veteran Receive Purple Heart Award


Naval Support Activity Panama City honored a WWII veteran this morning. The purple heart medal was awarded to the family of Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Wheeler Raymond Ervin. 

He was honored for his actions taken during combat in August of 1943. Petty Officer Ervin was able to receive the purple heart but didn’t before his discharge in 1946. He passed away in 1980 and Thursday his daughter accepted his medals on his behalf. 

“It makes us feel good that our father he served his country he tried to protect our country for us he’s a hero,” said Nicole Ervin Parker. 

Petty Officer Ervin’s grandson also attended the ceremony, sharing he was extremely proud to remember and honor his grandfather.
