Panama City Beach, Fla. - Dozens of emails from across the country poured into the inboxes of Panama City Beach city council members and employees in the wake of controversial comments made by Mayor Mike Thomas during last week's budget workshop.
Thomas, who later apologized, said he was attempted to make a joke when responding to Panama City Beach Police Chief Drew Whitman. Whitman was requesting an additional dispatcher and noted that he had two on maternity leave and was paying a significant amount of overtime thanks to that and to dispatchers who are out sick.
To which Thomas responded, "don't hire people who are fat, who smoke, or who might get pregnant -- save money anyway you can."
The emails sent to the city universally condemn the mayor for these comments and many of them note that his apology was not sufficient. You can read them below:
