Halloween treats sure are tasty, but too many of them can lead to big health problems down the road.

One candy bar sometimes leads to two, and two to four.
“They now say that upwards of 17 percent of the U.S. childhood population of the ages between 2 and 19 are considered obese,” Samantha Chapman, a nurse practitioner at Bay Medical Sacred Heart, said.
But is it necessary, or realistic, that we exclude sugar from our diets all together? No.
“Portion out the candy. Give them about two to three at a time at the most,” Chapman said.
The way we treat our bodies now will affect us forever. Childhood Obesity can lead to adult chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and different cardiac conditions.
Chapman said 90 percent of calories come from sugar. So how do we monitor our sugar intake?
“Try and get the candy out of their room and try to get it in a communal area. That way you can actually see how much they are taking in each day,” she said.
Or try what she calls the “Candy Buy Back”. Trade the candy for a few small toys or a couple dollars.
“So they can still feel like they have ownership of it but have a different reward other than something that’s sugary,” Chapman said.
We are our little one’s biggest role models.
“A child is one of our biggest imitators. So we know what we consume, they’re going to consume in the same way,” she said.
