If you’re someone who makes every season the season of giving, Bay Medical Sacred Heart is seeking volunteers 365 days a year.
At 87 years young, Nickie McAllaster is out of retirement and working her dream job.
“I always admired the volunteers. They always seemed so caring and so capable wanted to be one,” the volunteer said.
A couple years after retiring as a secretary, Nickie McAllaster found that she wasn’t done sharing her wisdom with the world.
“They’re so stressed when they come up here because it all pertains to heart,” she said.
After 17 years of showing patients to their rooms, she’s walked thousands of miles around the hospital.
Sontag had a similar experience after retiring as an engineer.
“It’s in my blood. I’ve been doing something ever since. I gotta stay busy doing something,” he said.
However, he can’t do it on his own.
“I need some help if any of you would like to come down here,” he joked.
A volunteer’s salary isn’t great.
“People ask me about the pay. My helping people is my pay. Just to know that maybe I’ve encouraged them a little, maybe I’ve made them feel a little bit better.”
