Bay County Commissioners approved a $840,200 contract with Emerald Coast Constructors to repair the county incinerator.
Commissioner Griff Griffitts said the incinerator is operational, but it received significant damage from Hurricane Michael that must be fixed, because it is helps provide energy to homes across the county.
“It is a waste-to-energy facility, we do generate energy from it,” he said. “It is a simplified form of recycling here in the county, so most of the MSW, municipal service waste, goes to the incinerator and they burn that for energy.”
The project is being funded by the county’s Hurricane Michael loan, but Griffitts said they are expecting it to be reimbursed by FEMA or state funds.
