PANAMA CITY, Fla. – One of the biggest problems following Hurricane Michael has been the lack of housing. especially affordable, low-income housing.
That’s why Americorps Goodwill and Goodworks partnered with the Emerald Coast Affordable Housing program to clear debris that has been in these low-cost houses since the storm.
Volunteers helped tear out moldy drywall, wet carpets, and other broken items in order to make it livable once again.
Organizers say volunteering like this is at the heart of what Americorp is all about.
“Americorp is about serving in your local community. It’s about getting things done. It’s about getting out and making ourselves available to programs such as this, so it just fits very well with not only the Goodwill mission, but it goes well with the Americorp mission,” said Samuel T. Jackson Jr, the Americorps Program Director.
Americorp will continue to excavate houses with the Emerald Coast Affordable Housing Program until they are all ready for occupants to move in.
