A part-time corrections officer with the Bay County Jail accidentally shot himself while in the Patterson Elementary School Parking lot, Friday morning.
The officer was injured in the leg and taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
Officials said the corrections officer was there for a job interview.
Panama City investigators declined to say what the corrections officer was doing when he accidentally discharged the weapon. They added that he will not face criminal charges because under Florida law an officer is allowed to have a gun on a school campus.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement on the incident Friday afternoon.
“We will be conducting a review to determine if any policies or procedures were violated and to determine if discipline or additional training is warranted.”
