SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. - One of the greatest female athletes of all time was in South Walton Thursday evening to visit with the Boys and Girls Club.
Jackie Joyner-Kersee was the special guest for their 4th Annual Steak & Steak Dinner.
Joyner-Kersee is a six-time Olympic medalist – winning three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the heptathlon and long jump across four different Olympic games.
Before all that, she was a member of her local Boys Club in Illinois, before the Boys and Girls clubs were combined. A director took her in anyway and gave her a place to grow.
Now she credits the Boys and Girls Club Organization with her success in life, and says she wanted to tell the kids in South Walton they can do the same.
"Hopefully I can be inspirational and share my story,” Joyner-Kersee says, “Talk about how an executive director when I came through the boys club made a difference in my life. Those are the people that really help nurture our young people. And giving them a place when those hours between 3:00 and 6:00 are so dangerous. They can come in and do homework, work on life skills, and really prepare them for life."
