PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The Lady Commodores softball team will no longer be clocking in hours at Joe Tom King Field. On Thursday, news broke that Gulf Coast State College will be replacing that field with a brand new one.
The GCSC board voted to approve the contract for GAC Contractors to construct the new field. It will be a sod field and will be complete with dugouts, batting cage, and bullpens for each team - along with locker rooms, weight rooms, and offices.
The new field will have something for everyone to enjoy, though. Spectactors will have coverage in the grandstand, and there will be side patios along with a concession stand.
This will be a top notch, NJCAA approved field. Officials say they are scheduled to start laying grass on July 24th, and will have an official groundbreaking ceremony a few days prior.
Changes on 23rd Street and Highway-98 did play a part in the decision to build the new field, which will be right across the street from the college off of 23rd Street.
The new field is projected to be finished by February 1, 2018, as long as the weather cooperates. GCSC has made arrangements to play at other sites temporarily in the event the field is not ready in time.
