Chipola first baseman Reynaldo Rivera, the Junior College National Player of the Year, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the Second Round of the MLB Draft with the 57th overall pick.
They must have wanted some extra power in their program – this year for the Indians he hit .438 with 20 home runs, 20 doubles, and 73 RBI.
Now Rivera has a decision to make – does he continue to Mississippi State to continue his college career and try to improve his stock, or does he join the Detroit system? His draft position is worth a projected $1.1 million.
Later, pitcher Evan Steele was taken by the Kansas City Royals with the 73rd overall pick. He's committed to Auburn, but his draft position is worth nearly $800 thousand.
Congratulations to both players taken, and there will certainly be more to come as the draft unfolds.
