WEWAHITCHKA, Fla. - 21 Teams in 21 Days is coming to an end for the 2017 football season! The last team highlighted is the Wewahitchka Gators.
Wewa is fielding a small squad this year. There are twenty kids on varsity, four of that twenty being seniors. There are also three ninth graders in that group. Wewa first year Head Coach Bobby Johns says it's unlikely that they move up anyone else from JV, which means a lot of guys will be playing on both ends of the ball.
There are two players working at the quarterback position. Senior Shannon Jones is taking the starting spot. At backup, the Pirates have freshman Creed Pariera who also starts on defense. He'll see some action so they can move Jones to receiver or tailback when needed.
The team has a lot of young lineman. No one on the O-line has played a varsity snap until this season.
Defensively, they're still moving a lot of guys around, but Trevor Nunnery will be the guy to step up on that side of the ball this season.
"Our slogan this year is "rise up," and kinda what our thoughts on that was that we were wanting to kind of rise back up. Wewahitchka has had some really good football teams over the years. So our goal is now to rise up above that and try to take that next step and get back in the playoffs and then get to the point maybe down the road that our numbers are good enough and our talent is good enough that we can compete with more of the elite teams around this area," said Coach Johns.
