FREEPORT, Fla. - Up next on 21 Teams in 21 Days, we take a look at the Freeport Bulldogs, who have a new head coach for the first time in a decade and a half.
Former Head Coach Jim Anderson retired after 16 years of leading the Dogs, and in steps Shaun Arntz, who had been an assistant coach for the last nine seasons.
He's known the kids since they first started playing, and is excited about what he has in his first season.
First, a returning starter at quarterback – senior Zack Johnson – a dual-threat guy who excels at throwing on the run. He'll be getting the ball to Rajah Hooks, while seniors Ian Harrison and Jalen Washington will be solidifying the offensive line.
On defense, there's one guy you can't miss – 6’5’’ 295 lb senior defensive lineman Junior Carswell, a beast no matter where you line him up. If you some how get past him, you'll have Justin Clark waiting on you.
The Bulldogs went 6-4 last year and are hoping to improve on that winning season in order to make the playoffs in the first year of the points system.
The playoff changes bring a very business like attitude to how the bulldogs approach the season.
"Every game counts. You need those points,” Coach Arntz says, “You need to win that game and get those points. Therefore we don't have an opponent circled. We don't have a date circled. Yeah, we do – it's the first game. Then after that, we'll circle the second game. It's one game at a time. It's one play at a time. It's one practice at a time. It's one rep at a time. it's one period at a time."
