WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. - Officials in Washington County are giving back to the people in the community who have given their all by dedicating a bench to honor local veterans.
A ceremony on Wednesday morning unveiled the bench that will be placed in the Government Offices Building in Chipley.
The wooden bench was crafted by local sculptor, Chad Gainey.
It symbolizes remembrance, and Christopher Hyatt, the Veterans Service Officer said the carved features make it difficult not to inspire any of those who sit on it.
"There's a fallen soldier memorial on one part, and an eagle which represents freedom on the other. And inlaid in the bench are all the services on the back part of it -- and it's just something to memorialize the people of Washington County that have done great things," he explained.
Senator George Gainer also attended the ceremony, and to him, the bench symbolizes service.
"You're just reminded of their sacrifice and the ones who aren't here today -- the ones who gave it all. And they're still over there, parts of them strung all over the world. That's what you think when you sit down on that bench," he said.
The bench will be placed in the lobby at the Government Offices Building in Washington County.
