YOUNGSTOWN, Fla. - Each week, News 13 partners with Sonny's Barbecue and Bay District Schools to present the It's a Big Deal Student's Care award.
Students are nominated by their teachers each week and the new winner is announced every Monday on News 13 Live at Five.
This week we honor Tristen Godwin, a first grader at Waller Elementary School. Tristen saved his baby sister from falling into some hot coals, but in doing so he received second degree burns on his foot.
"They said I was a hero," Tristen said.
"He could see what was happening when the children were running around, and it was a fire that was put out over a week ago and so they didn't even realize the coals were hot but when his foot went in, he ended up with second degree burns." Tristen's teacher Karla Odom said.
He is not the only Big Deal in Bay County this week. Teachers nominated students at 21 Bay District Schools.
