The Jackson County Sheriff's Office was in the middle of a homicide investigation Thursday, after a body was found in Greenwood.

Officials said JCSO received a 911 call Thursday morning just before 7 o’clock, about an unresponsive person lying in the middle of Braves Boulevard at the Greenwood Trailer Park, just off of Highway 71 in Greenwood.

"When EMS got on scene they determined it to be a early 30-year-old white male suffering from some trauma to the body,” said Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts.

Officials said the man was already dead by the time they got there and identified him as Michael Sheffield. They believe that whatever happened to him, happened in the middle of the night Wednesday night.

"I have officers out doing interviews and running down potential leads. We do not think this is a random incident. We think it's something that occurred here probably from an individual that lived here or maybe some friends or something of that nature,” said Roberts.

Multiple agencies assisted in the investigation, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Medical Examiners Office, and the State Attorneys Office.

"There was some obvious trauma to the body. I really can't go into detail about much about what that includes but we feel like whatever occurred took place during the night last night,” said Roberts.

Officials said this particular area of Jackson County is not usually heavily crime related, but the sheriff's office has responded to multiple domestic violence cases in the area.

"We've actually been through this particular roadway in the past for domestic violence issues. It's a good possibility that that may have some involvement in this case. It's really too early to tell the manner of death or the cause of death at this point is yet to be determined,” said Roberts.

Officials discovered that Michael Sheffield's wife, Heather Sheffield, violated her pretrial release from an unrelated charge and was arrested.

This case is still under investigation and News 13 will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
