An SUV went up in flames on the side of Highway 231 near S. Campflowers Rd. Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters with Bay County Fire Rescue said the driver of the 2000 GMC Yukon was driving north on the highway when he noticed smoke coming from an air condition vent. He had been having electrical problems recently and pulled over to the side of the road and got out.

Officials said the fire likely started in the engine compartment.

Firefighter said he did the right thing by finding a safe spot to pull over and getting out when he felt there was a problem.

No one was hurt as a result of the fire.

The northbound lanes were closed for about an hour because of cleanup efforts and smoke on the roadway, which backed up traffic for about a mile.
