PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Panama City Beach Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by beach police officers Tuesday night.
Shawn Anthony Dumitras, 43, of Villa Rica, Ga., has "an extensive criminal history involving drug trafficking and firearm offenses," officials wrote in a news release.
They added that at the time of the shooting Dumitras had an active warrant from the United States Marshals Service for drug trafficking.
Officers were called to the 79 West Apartment complex Tuesday night after residents became concerned about Dumitras. Beach Police said when they got to the apartments and approached the man in the car, he became hostile and started shooting at officers. Officers returned fire and the man took off to the parking lot of the "Y" Shopping Center on Front Beach Road. There, shooting between officers and Dumitras continued.
Dumitras was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers were injured. As is standard procedure the incident is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
