Update: Student Arrested After Surfside Middle School Threat

Lynn Haven, Fla. - A Surfside Middle School student was arrested after reportedly making threats against her school in Panama City Beach, according to Bay County Sheriff's Investigators.

A parent called investigators Monday night after her child reported a classmate had posted concerning photos on the smart phone application Instagram.

"This was passed on from student to student to student and finally one student ended up making contact with his mother, and his mother ended up making contact with the sheriff's office," Inv. Aubrey Chance said.

In one of the posts, Chance said the student compared herself to one of the shooters from the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. In another videos, the suspect stabs a basketball repeatedly and voices the saying "It's time."

Investigators said they didn't find any weapons the student could use to carry out the threatened violence, but the she still caused a disruption as some concerned parents kept their children home from school Tuesday.

The student is charged with Disruption of School Function, but investigators are not releasing her name or photo because of her age and that the charge is a misdemeanor.

Surfide Administrators said they are proud of the student for speaking up and hope this incident will be a reminder to others that is they see something, they should say something.

"What we're trying to get students to realize is to pay attention to things that don't seem just quite right around them and report it to a authority figure or to an adult nearby them," Principal Sue Harrell said.
