Homeowners will be glad to hear South Walton Fire District received an updated ISO rating from the Insurance Services Office that will go into effect soon. The change could result in lower insurance rates.
"We're evaluated every five years on all our fire protection outreach education and so forth," said Ryan Crawford the Operations Chief for South Walton Fire. "We were really excited to get that score down."
South Walton Fire District was at a 5, but they improved down to a 3 - putting them in the top 10 percent in the nation.
"We've been at a five for at least the past 15 years," said Crawford.
With 84 square miles of coverage area, the District says improvements like updated training and water systems played a big role. But not only does this benefit the department but the homeowners in the area with savings on insurance.
"I'm just grateful to have so many competent people taking care of us," said Duane Kotke, a Santa Rosa Beach resident.
The new rating will go into effect on January 1st, 2017. Typically, homeowners will have to wait until their policy is up and then can notify the company.
