Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. - United States Senator Bill Nelson, made a planned stop in Walton County to meet with local government officials, educational leaders and business owners.
"This is just another way of having that dialogue with the local officials who are elected to represent the people and therefore, I can get a lot of my information from them," said Senator Bill Nelson.
One of the hot topics Sen. Nelson spoke on, was his stand on offshore oil drilling.
"The U.S. Air Force has taken a very strong position, that they don't want any oil being drilled out here in the Eastern Gulf Test and Training Range."
The Eastern Gulf Training Range is the largest training range for the United States Military in the world.
"And goodness gracious, they've got a test range 350 miles, from south to north. So, they are doing all of the testing and the training for all branches of the services, including things that are going on under the water," explained Sen. Nelson.
Sen. Nelson told us the military wants to invest millions of dollars in new equipment and new weapon systems.
"That's why we want to protect it. And, I was thanking the local officials for taking such a strong stand and to strongly stay firm against oil drilling. So, that we can protect our military and the military test range," said Sen. Nelson.
Sen. Nelson will be making several stops in Florida's Panhandle. Including making a stop Tuesday to talk about the Port in Panama City.
