Sen. Gainer Says So Far He's 'Against' the Daylight Saving Bill

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Senator George Gainer (R-Panama City) weighs in on the recent push from legislators to change Daylight Saving Time.

Gainer says if Northwest Florida supports the bill, he's for it. However, until then he's against the bill.

This week a senate committee voted in favor of a plan to eliminate Daylight Saving Time. This bill also puts Panhandle counties in Central time, on Eastern time like the rest of the state.

The Senate bill sponsor is Greg Steube (R-Sarasota). Gainer believes a drastic measure like this should be voted on.

"If we want it, that's fine. I don't want somebody from down South or wherever, cramming it down our throat here and telling us we got to have it. And I don't think they'll do that. I really think this is going to take a congressional intervention but I want Congress and the state of Florida to know that until the people of Northwest Florida tell me that this is what they want, I am very much against it," said Gainer.

The House's version of the bill, which does not include the time zone change, passed its first vote Wednesday. If the Florida legislature passes the bill, it would still need approval from Congress and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
