PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - The promised they would sue and they weren't lying.
Two scooter rental businesses, Classy Cycles Inc. and Classic Rentals Inc. are suing the City of Panama City Beach in hopes of quashing two new ordinances.
The first ordinance prohibits the rental of motor scooters within the city after September 8, 2020. The second ordinance prohibits overnight rental and use of rental scooters in the city.
City leaders and law enforcement have been at odds over scooter rentals for the past several years.
In their lawsuit the businesses argue the city doesn't have the authority to enact these ordinances under state law, that the general public has a legal right to rent scooters if they wish and that city leaders can't lawfully prohibit the businesses.
The city council is expected to discuss the lawsuit in an upcoming executive session during their next meeting.
