Rutherford Student Killed in Crash Identified

Panama City, Fla. - Students and staff at Rutherford high school are reeling from the death of one of their own.

Kyle Demaio was killed in a car accident on 7th Street and Tyndall Parkway during lunch break Wednesday afternoon.

"Like all students will, we're not really - like we're in shock. We don't expect it to happen to one of our own," said
Rutherford High School Senior, Kayleigh Botcorf.

She says she's shocked by the wreck that killed her friend.

It happened around 12:15 p.m. The 17-year-old driver and 18 year old Kyle Demaio, who was the passenger, were in a white Ford Ranger truck when the driver pulled out in front of a Dodge Charger.

"It was occupied by two teenagers that attempted to turn West on to 7th Street and pulled into the path of the other vehicle which resulted in a collision," said BCSO Capt. Michael Branning.

Botcorf says she was nearby.

"Me and my sister actually passed by the wreck itself on the way to lunch. We were trying to figure out what happened. I recognized the car myself, but we didn't think much of it," she said

Botcorf says she later found out after lunch from a classmate."I'm still in shock because the car itself was a few minutes ahead of us."

Rutherford Principal Coy Pilson issued this statement:

"We were saddened today to hear of the loss of one of our students in a mid-day car accident.  We immediately called for additional counselors to join our staff and those counselors will be available for students and faculty who need support at this difficult time.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this young man and we are truly and deeply sorry to have lost him as a student, as a friend and as a Rutherford Ram."

Bay District Schools plan to make a more detailed statement in the near future when the victim's family and next-of-kin have been notified.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured, and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
