MEXICO BEACH, Fla. - Turkey Trots are a tradition all over the country today, as well as right here in Mexico Beach. More than 200 turkey lovers, runners, friends, and family came out to Mexico Beach on the holiday to use their feet before they eat.
"It's just a good tradition and burn off a little bit of the food we are gonna eat today," said Holly Alves.
"We've done it every year, just as a way to earn that pie," said Ed Holmes.
But this Turkey Trot doesn't just burn calories. It also gives back to the community.
"This year, proceeds are going to Breastfeed bay which is a sub-task force of the Community Health Task Force in Bay County that supports and promotes breastfeeding throughout the area," said race director April Wisdom.
The day also brings out of town family and friends together. Being on the beach doesn't hurt, either.
"Just being with family and friends is the best part. And it's not bad being at the beach. And eating the turkey!" said Jason and Holly Alves.
After the race, runners were ready for some tasty food.
"I like the bread personally. My mother in laws stuffed shells," said Jason and Holly Alves.
"Apple pie," said Ethan Holmes.
Wisdom says this year was the race's biggest year yet. They expect to raise anywhere from $1500 to $3000 for Breastfeed Bay.
