BAY COUNTY, Fla. - The search is on for at least two suspects involved in a rash of rent drop box burglaries across Bay County.
The crafty thieves targeted apartment complexes by stealing rent checks and money orders residents leave in the drop boxes.
Whispering Palm Apartments in Springfield is the latest complex struck by the two men.
According to Sgt. David Higgins with the Bay County Sheriff's Office, the two suspects hit ten apartments.
Higgins said the spree started at the beginning of August.
"I know that there had been several apartment locations hit in Bay County," said Higgins.
Property Manager Chelsey Childree said Whispering Palm has been hit four times alone.
"Saturday is when we saw them, almost caught them," said Childree.
Higgins is working with several police departments including Springfield, Panama City Beach and Panama City.
"Right now we do have some leads that we're following up on. We do know that these same subjects who are committing the crimes here in Bay County have also committed them in other parts of Florida and other states," said Higgins.
The thieves are taking checks and money orders worth thousands of dollars.
Childree says her complex has lost $27,000.
"I feel like you know the residents have been violated - you know, their information, and you know us. I just can't believe something like this would happen."
Higgins recommends residents to pay rent to the apartment manager in-person and avoid the drop- boxes.
