New Florida Law Restricts Cough Medicine Sales to Minors

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A common ingredient in your medicine cabinet is the center of a new Florida law taking effect January first.

The law prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from buying cough medicines containing Dextromethorphan.

The ingredient causes it's user to feel high if taken in large doses and can easily be abused.

The new law requires a photo i.d. to buy these medicines, but they will still be available over the counter.

"Well you've have to weigh the risk, the benefit versus the risk of people not being able to get it, but I think that the benefit is going to be great especially if we've had some emergency room visits and possibly deaths from this," said Pharmacist Laura Gould, Rx Express Owner.
