BAY COUNTY, Fla - The Bay County Sheriff's Office now has a new criminal investigation unit.
Sheriff Tommy Ford established the Financial Crimes Unit on January 14th. The goal is to combat identity theft, scams, credit card fraud, check fraud, embezzlement, and any other financial crimes. The BCSO received reports of over a thousand cases of the various types of fraud in 2016.
"With the way technology is changing, the what we call fraudsters, have evolved and they have used this technology to perpetrate fraud in various ways," says Corporal Craig Romans "They continuously evolve their tactics which makes us evolve ours."
Corporal Romans says their program is participating with local businesses, both financial and retail, to report any potential scams and frauds that could be heading from one business to another.
