PANAMA CITY, Fla. - For many veterans struggling with PTSD or other mental health issues, everyday can be a battle. A new program at Bay County Vet Center is addressing mental health with music therapy.
The center held their first guitar group graduation ceremony Monday. Those graduating had completed 10 guitar lessons and will receive their very own guitar as a gift upon completion. The classes focus on the physical, mental and social aspects of music.
"Some of our veterans play for their grandchildren and their daughters, very soothing, so that's why we like to think outside the box... kind of an alternative medicine way to treat symptoms that people are suffering from," said Bay County Vet Center Readjustment Counselor September Sims.
The graduating class was about a dozen people and many of them plan to continue to play using their new guitars.
