Local Man Meets Firefighter Who Saved His Life Off-Duty

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A close brush with death changed the lives of one family and a local firefighter forever.

On Tuesday, David Brooks met Panama City Fireman, Lt. Billy Mixon. Mixon saved Brooks' life last month by performing CPR while off-duty.

Brooks was found unresponsive in his driver's seat with his daughter at a Bay County gas station.

"We were inside the truck and at that point I couldn't get it into reverse or something, and that was the last thing that I remembered," said Brooks.

His daughter, Summer Brooks, caught the attention of Mixon. She was honored alongside Mixon Tuesday for calling 9-1-1 during the ordeal.

"I seen him starting to turn blue, and now that it's over and he's one of the very rare people to come out of this - it's hit me," said Summer.

Mixon performed chest compressions on Brooks for ten minutes after Mixon lost his pulse three times before police arrived with an AED.

Humbled by this moment that will last a lifetime - Mixon says it's something any law enforcement officer or first responder would do.

"Your training just kind of takes over, and you're never off-duty I guess."

Brooks says the way he feels now is beyond words."It's unbelievable meeting the guy that you know would - actually the reason why I'm here today."

Lt. Mixon said in the ten years he's worked as a firefighter, this is the first time he's met someone he saved.
